Course Information: The Highlander Institute’s Orton-Gillingham course at the Associate Level is a one-year training program accredited by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. Upon completion of the course and practicum, participants may apply to the Academy for membership at the Associate Level. The complete course includes 60 seminar hours and a 100-hour supervised practicum over a period of at least eight months. Six graduate credits are offered through Endicott College for the full course and practicum.
The coursework will be offered in two phases. Phase I involves 35 hours of coursework over 5 days. Phase II involves an additional 30 hours scheduled during the school year on mutually determined dates in the following format: 5 Saturday workshops. The course will take place at the Highlander Institute (65 Atlantic Ave in Providence).

Practicum tutoring may begin as July 1, 2014 with qualified students. Participants must see a student at least twice a week between 45 – 60 minutes each session on non-consecutive days. O-G tutors select practicum students with approval from the O-G instructor. Tutors may charge families $20 / hour for practicum tutoring. Observations will be conducted through the video submission of recorded tutoring sessions; parental consent must be granted to video sessions. Feedback will be provided through written observations submitted through email and phone conferences.
Trainees who would prefer in person observations may opt to conduct their practicum at the MET School in Providence with a selected MET student. These sessions must take place on campus during the regular school day and can begin in late September.
