Community Educator Network Project Application

We are currently recruiting five innovative school and district partners in the Northeast to explore how community educators — members of school neighborhoods who are trained and deployed in purpose-driven roles within schools — can support multiple school goals. Project work will support partners as they design, implement, and evaluate customized community educator strategies, helping them build sustainable solutions to current staffing and human resource challenges.

  • Establishing a successful community educator initiative requires close coordination between school leaders, current faculty, and community partners. Partners must be willing to engage a current employee (at either the district or school level) in a coordinator role, responsible for organizing, convening, and managing the community educator group. The estimated time commitment for this role is 2-3 hours per week.

    Project partners will be asked to allocate funding to support a community educator cohort (3-8 people) at an hourly rate of at least $20. Community educators could be ready to support schools as early as October 2023, and should be hired to work at least 20 hours a week.

    In order to meet our grant goals, school and district partners will be asked to identify student groups / classrooms to work with Community Educators, as well as comparable control groups. We will be collecting non-identifiable student data twice (baseline and end of year). Sources will include existing data measures such as interim assessments, discipline, and attendance; and Highlander Institute tools and protocols including our Student Experience Survey and focus groups.
